The Shrewsbury International Comedy Festival (SICF) has announced that award-winning Irish comedian and musician Abandoman will join the line-up for its flagship gala show on Sunday, 13th July. Known for his quick wit and interactive performances, Abandoman, aka Rob Broderick, creates hilarious, on-the-spot songs based on audience suggestions.

The Gala Show will also feature Scott Bennett as MC and stand-up star Lindsey Santoro, alongside other acts to be revealed. The festival’s opening night on Wednesday, 9th July, hosted at St Mary’s Church, will include performances from Mick Miller and Nina Gilligan, setting the stage for an exciting week of live comedy.

Abandoman has built a reputation as a unique talent in the comedy world, with appearances at Glastonbury, Latitude, Reading, and Leeds festivals, as well as TV slots on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and Alan Carr’s Happy Hour. He has also supported Ed Sheeran on tour, blending sharp humor with an energetic musical style.

Festival director Beth McGowan welcomed Abandoman’s return:
"Abandoman performed at the festival in 2017, so it’s great to have him back. His improvised songs based on ideas suggested by the audience are legendary. I seem to remember him creating a rap about being careful not to swallow the leaves from green tea last time he was with us – it was absolutely hilarious!”

SPORTS DIGEST 🏆

Shrewsbury Town Football Club

In a thrilling League One cross-border derby, Shrewsbury Town claimed a crucial 2-1 victory over high-flying Wrexham with John Marquis scoring a goal in each half.

The match got off to an exciting start when Shrewsbury took the lead in the 16th minute. George Lloyd intercepted the ball in Wrexham's half and delivered a perfect pass to Marquis, who made no mistake, firing the ball past Wrexham keeper Arthur Okonkwo.

However, Wrexham responded quickly, with Steven Fletcher equalising just seven minutes later. Fletcher, in top form, met a brilliant cross from former Shrewsbury player Ryan Barnett, heading it past goalkeeper Jamal Blackman for his fifth goal in seven games.

Just before halftime, Lloyd came close to restoring the lead for the hosts, narrowly missing with a header. At the other end, Ollie Rathbone also had a chance for Wrexham but was unable to convert.

The second half saw Shrewsbury regain the upper hand, with Lloyd playing a key role again. After a mistake by Wrexham’s defense, Lloyd was fouled in the box by Eoghan O'Connell, earning a penalty for his side. Although Marquis' initial shot was saved, he capitalised on the rebound, securing his second goal of the match.

Wrexham pushed for another equaliser, and in the 80th minute, Barnett’s precise cross found Paul Mullin. However, Blackman and a pair of vital defensive blocks kept Shrewsbury's lead intact.

The victory moves Shrewsbury up to 21st in the table, now just five points from safety, while Wrexham, despite the loss, remain third but two points behind League One leaders Birmingham City, with three games more played than the Blues.

Shrewsbury’s win is a significant boost in their fight for survival in League One, while Wrexham’s hopes of reaching the top spot were delayed once again.

Stewart becomes manager Gareth Ainsworth's first January transfer window acquisition, as Harrison Biggins also returns from his loan spell at Carlisle.
