LOCAL NEWS THIS WEEK 📰

New African and Caribbean food shop enriches local culinary scene

Doctors by day and food enthusiasts by night, Adrian and Reem have brought a taste of African and Caribbean cuisine to Shrewsbury with their new venture, Hibiscus.

Recently opened on St John's Hill, the shop fills a unique niche in our local food landscape, offering authentic ingredients alongside ready-to-cook meal kits designed for home chefs looking to explore new flavors.

The couple aims to make these diverse culinary traditions more accessible to the Shrewsbury community, providing both ingredients and inspiration for residents interested in expanding their cooking repertoire.

Urban landscape exhibition continues at Bear Steps Gallery

A compelling collection of urban-inspired artwork by Sam Sweet is currently on display at Bear Steps Gallery until March 29th.

The exhibition features limited edition prints that transform overlooked city streets, buildings and back alleys into vibrant visual narratives with elements of comic book storytelling.

The artwork invites visitors to reconsider the "missed views" of everyday urban settings—those architectural details and hidden corners we typically walk past without noticing.

This free exhibition offers Shrewsbury residents and visitors alike a fresh perspective on urban environments and their underappreciated beauty. Those interested can follow the artist on Instagram @samsweetdesigns.

Shrewsbury Food Festival wins regional tourism award

Shrewsbury Food Festival has been named Tourism Event/Festival of the Year at the 2025 West Midlands Tourism Awards for the second consecutive year.

The festival, organized by local events business Shropshire Festivals, beat out numerous big-city competitors at the March 18th ceremony held at Edgbaston Stadium. The annual event takes place in Quarry Park on the last weekend of June, featuring around 200 exhibitors, chef demonstrations, live music, and family entertainment.

Festival owner Beth Heath expressed pride in putting "Shrewsbury firmly on the map as a great place to visit." This year's festival will take place on June 28th and 29th.

Shrewsbury celebrates place among UK's most desirable locations

Shrewsbury has earned a coveted spot on The Sunday Times' 2025 list of the best places to live in the UK. Our county town was included in the Midlands shortlist alongside six other locations, including Eccleshall in Staffordshire.

While the overall Midlands crown went to the Warwickshire village of Ilmington, Shrewsbury's inclusion recognizes what residents already know and love—our vibrant mix of independent shops, historic high streets, and beautiful River Severn setting that continues to attract thousands of visitors every weekend.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK 📸

This week, our Photo of the Week highlights the stunning work of local photographer Jordan Stokes, with a striking image of Shrewsbury Castle. Capturing the town’s rich history and dramatic skies, Jordan’s photography showcases Shrewsbury’s beauty in a truly unique way.

You can find more of his work at Shrewsbury Arts & Crafts (off Castle Street), where he offers a range of items including:

  • Prints

  • Bookmarks (new stock coming soon)

  • Greeting Cards (new stock coming soon)

  • Cushions
