LOCAL NEWS THIS WEEK π°
Shropshire County Show Heats Up with New 'Fire Stage'
The Shropshire County Show is set to add extra sizzle this year with the launch of its brand-new 'Fire Stage,' celebrating the art of cooking over open flames. Local favourite Adam Purnell, known as the Shropshire Lad, will headline alongside top chefs like Stephane Delourme, formerly of Rick Stein fame, and Zack Greenaway of Ironbridgeβs Embers restaurant.
The show, marking its 150th anniversary at the DMOS People West Mid Showground on May 24, promises a day full of family-friendly fun, from monster trucks to vintage tractors. Adding the Fire Stage brings a mouth-watering twist to the dayβs festivities.

Chair Art Challenge Brings New Life to Old Furniture
The Belle Vue Arts Festival is inviting the community to get creative, with chairs! Their innovative 'Chair Art' competition is encouraging locals to rescue old chairs and transform them into imaginative works of art, following this yearβs theme: Movement.
Participants can use any materials they like, promoting both creativity and recycling. Donβt have a chair tucked away? They suggest using Freecycle or similar platforms to find one. Space is limited, so entrants are asked to email ahead to secure their spot.
Full competition details can be found here. It's a brilliant opportunity to showcase your artistic flair, and maybe even take home a prize.
Greyfriars Bridge Closure Set to Impact Summer Traffic
Heads up: on Friday, Shropshire Council announced that Greyfriars Bridge will be closed from June 2 to August 5 while essential refurbishment works are carried out. A diversion route will be in place throughout the project to help manage traffic.
Not everyone is happy about the timing. In a Facebook comment, Shrewsbury BID shared their concerns: "Weβre really concerned about this decision and have already reached out to the Council to express the impact this will have on trade and footfall over summer. We have asked to discuss ASAP. Youβll hear more from us on this very shortly."

SPORTS DIGEST π
Shrewsbury Town Football Club β½
Difficult End to a Tough Season
Shrewsbury Townβs turbulent League One campaign came to a close with contrasting performances. Despite a spirited effort in the final games, relegation had already been confirmed.
On Easter Monday, the Shrews suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat away at Northampton Town. A series of defensive lapses proved costly, with Northamptonβs Dara Costelloe striking twice, alongside goals from Aaron McGowan and Cameron McGeehan. Though Shrewsbury enjoyed spells of possession, their inability to convert chances saw the game slip beyond them. John Marquisβ late consolation goal was scant reward on a disappointing afternoon.
However, Shrewsbury showed commendable resilience in their final away game of the season at Barnsley. Inspired by a brilliant performance from John Marquis, who bagged a brace, the Shrews recorded a 2-1 victory. Marquis converted deliveries from Luca Hoole and Callum Stewart, while Jamal Blackman made crucial saves to preserve the lead. Although Jon Russell pulled one back for Barnsley, Shrewsbury held on to end their difficult campaign with a hard-earned win.
Managerial Developments
As Shrewsbury prepare for life in League Two, talks are underway to secure Michael Appleton on a longer-term basis. Appleton, who took charge after Gareth Ainsworthβs departure to Gillingham, faced a near-impossible task of overturning a significant points deficit. Despite the clubβs relegation, there is optimism that with a fresh start and stable leadership, Appleton could spearhead the rebuilding project and guide the team back up the divisions.
Shrewsbury Town Women
Itβs a big day for Shrewsbury Town Women as they play their final home match of the season today against Lye Town. The action kicks off at 2pm at the Community Pitch (SY2 6ST).
The team will be aiming to finish their home campaign on a positive note, and with strong local support behind them, theyβll be hoping to deliver a memorable performance.
