Plans to refurbish Greyfriars Bridge have been postponed until 2026, following concerns from local businesses and residents. Shropshire Council’s decision allows more time to explore ways to reduce disruption.

The bridge remains a key pedestrian and cycle route into the town centre, and the pause has been welcomed as a chance for better community-led planning going forward.

SPORTS DIGEST 🏆

Shrewsbury Town Football Club

Final Day Frustrations

Shrewsbury Town wrapped up a difficult League One campaign with a 2–1 defeat at the hands of Crawley Town. Despite a late effort to salvage a point, the damage was done in a second half that saw Salop reduced to ten men and ultimately outmaneuvered.

The game sparked into life shortly after halftime when Crawley earned a penalty, calmly converted by Rushian Hepburn-Murphy. Things went from bad to worse for Shrewsbury when Josh Feeney was dismissed for dissent following the decision. Crawley capitalized on their advantage, doubling their lead with a sharp finish from Max Anderson at the hour mark.

While Mal Benning's late goal offered a glimmer of hope, it was too little, too late for the Shrews, who were already resigned to relegation after results elsewhere sealed their fate earlier in April.

Appleton Signs On for the Rebuild

In a significant move toward stability, Shrewsbury Town have confirmed Michael Appleton will continue as head coach, signing a two-year contract. Appleton, who arrived in March following Gareth Ainsworth’s move to Gillingham, now has the task of rebuilding the squad and morale ahead of next season in League Two.

Though his short initial spell yielded just one win from eight league games, the board appears to have placed its faith in his long-term vision. Appleton, with experience at clubs like Lincoln City and Oxford United, brings a reputation for disciplined structure and player development: qualities Salop will need in abundance to bounce back.
